This information book tells about all aspects of 19th Century clothing. For men, it covers working clothes, long and short coats, underwear, hats, sportswear, etc. For women, it covers gowns, the bustle (worn under clothes), fancy shoes, fancy hats, hair styles, cleanliness, etc. The book also touches on children's clothes. In each section, the author describes how each aspect changed throughout the 19th century. For example, women began by wearing empire gowns, changed to tight bodices and long flounced skirts in the middle of the century, wore tight dresses in the 1870s, and wore more practical clothing near the end of the century.
This book would be a great teaching tool to help students understand the culture of America during the 1800s. This book goes into great detail about the different appearance of both men, women, and children. The illustrations would also help students picture what dress looked like during this time period. This book could be easily integrated into a history lesson, giving students a fun way to learn about the 19th Century. I liked the layout of the book and I think it would be very user friendly.
