Biography picture book
Grades K-3
This book told the story of Marcenia Lyle, a young girl who loved playing baseball. Marcenia always played baseball after school, while the other girls played with dolls. Marcenia's parents did not like the fact she was such a tomboy. One day a baseball coach, named Mr. Street, came to recruit baseball players for his baseball camp. At first Mr. Street would not invite Marcenia to his camp, however, Marcenia proved she was an amazing baseball player. Marcenia eventually got her parents to support her hobby, and got their permission to go to the baseball camp. Marcenia grew up to be the first woman to play for an all-male professional baseball team.
This was a very inspirational story about a girl who had big dreams. I think students would be able to relate to Marcenia Lyle. All students have goals that they want to achieve when they get older. I liked this biography because it told of one account in Marcenia Lyle's life. However, in the afterward, the author told about all aspects of Marcenia's life. This book would also be a great teaching tool to introduce students to the 1930s. Even though it is normal for women to play baseball today, in that time period women were expected to be nurses, teachers, or maids. The illustrations also do a great job at accompanying the text.
